Doctoral student in Materials Chemistry of Doped Organic Semiconductors in EU Training Network FADOS

Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting a doctoral student to join the European Marie Sklodowska-Curie training network FADOS. The position is based in the research group of Christian Müller at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

As part of an international cohort of 17 doctoral students across 16 research groups in Europe, you will contribute to advancing the understanding and applications of doped organic semiconductors.

About FADOS

FADOS (Fundamentals and Applications of Doped Organic Semiconductors) is a consortium composed of 8 universities, 4 research institutes, and 4 companies from EU countries, the UK and Switzerland.

The mission of FADOS is to achieve targeted modification of semiconductor properties through doping. The goal of the project is to develop fundamental understanding and innovative fabrication processes to solve urgent challenges associated with organic electronic devices and enable new components with sustainable functionalities.

Training and development

FADOS will offer training at the forefront of research and innovation in organic electronics. The network provides exposure to academic and commercial working environments through a balanced secondment plan and access to a complete training programme.

Doctoral candidates will participate in 7 network-wide events, as well as secondments and collaborations, which entail travel to several EU countries.

Research environment

The Müller Research Group focuses on the physical chemistry and materials science of organic semiconductors, polymer blends and composites, and develops new plastic materials for wearable electronics and energy technologies.

Project overview

The goal of your research will be to establish how doping gradients can be used for spatial modulation of the electrical and mechanical properties of organic semiconductors. You will work closely with fellow doctoral students and postdocs at Chalmers and in the FADOS network.

This role entails secondments in Spain, Germany and the US.

Your profile
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science (or in the process of completing the degree).
  • Experience with organic electronics and/or polymer science.
  • Excellent collaboration skills.
  • Willingness and the ability to travel within the Schengen region, the UK and the US.
  • Very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing.
Eligibility for FADOS
  • At the time of recruitment, be in the first four years of the research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • Mobility rule: The applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.
  • The applicant can be of any nationality.

Main responsibilities

The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research and to courses to develop your scientific and professional skills.

As a doctoral student you are expected to:

  • Develop your own ideas
  • Communicate scientific results orally as well as in writing

In addition, up to 10 percent of your time will be dedicated to departmental duties, e.g. teaching on the undergraduate level.

Contract terms
  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from the start.
  • The position is limited to four years of full-time research studies.
  • A starting salary of 34'550 SEK (about 3'100 Euros) per month (valid from May 25, 2025), including a living allowance, a mobility allowance, and a family allowance (if applicable) in accordance with the MSCA regulations for doctoral researchers.
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
